Table 23: School Tasks Directed Toward Maintaining the Health of Staff and Students
Type of Task | Number of Schools (30) |
Activities | 15 |
Education | 6 |
Support for parents, staff, students | 7 |
Professional development | 3 |
It is interesting that some schools feel that good mental health and reduced stress for parents, students and staff will lead to improved student achievement.

Type of Task | Number of Schools (30) |
Activities | 2 |
Professional development | 7 |
Supervision and enforcement | 6 |
Communication/education | 6 |
Staff performance appraisal | 1 |
Many of the tasks expected to improve the safety of staff and students are directed at controlling student behaviour. This is to be expected given the consistently low ratings students give schools for disciplining other students.

As indicated in the safety related tasks, student behaviour is seen to be an important part of creating a safe environment for learning. Commonly, the schools are teaching the students to be responsible for their own behaviour.
Table 26: School Tasks Undertaken to Improve Health and Safety

Schools are recognizing that how they are organized affects their outcomes. This shows that schools are examining the impediments to improved performance in depth. There aren't a lot of tasks identified for improving school safety, but many of the identified tasks require real resources to accomplish.
