About Education
Conversations About Education
will provide
a place for
teachers, parents, students, administrators, and the broader community
to have conversations about education. This will be a forum
where
all of the stakeholders can discuss the educational needs of the
community
and explore ways of meeting those needs. While the list is not
moderated,
subscribers who prefer to attack individuals or professions rather than
discuss issues will be removed.

FutureCraft:
Shaping
Society's Future site is a
repository for my writing about education
and a link to various web sites that I have developed or manage. The
philosophical
link among the elements of the site is a belief that an understanding
of
our society will allow us to shape it. (Index)
Web Sites
This site looks at the
expectations for
school based management
and how they have evolved. Also, there are links a variety of
Education
Policy sites.
The Information
Highway site was developed as a
resource for the Alberta Education
CTS:Information Highway Module. It supports an introductory
course
about the Internet use and Web Page design. A feature of the
site
is links to tutorials for web page and site development.
WebtoWeb
provides an example of translating from a mind map or web to a web
site.
The technique integrates technology with any subject and supports
co-operative
learning and project based learning. Links and references on
the
site lead to discussions about the development of and nature of web
documents.
The Alberta
Consumers'
Association site was developed
as a portal to sources of consumer information.
The site supports the work of the Alberta Consumers' Association and
the
Alberta social studies and CALM curricula. (Index)
Writing
One
Child – Many Communities: Recasting the Purpose of Education
establishes
the purpose of education as helping students to reconcile the
expectation
of the many communities to which they belong and to help the students
acquire
the skills, knowledge, and attitudes expected by the communities in
which
they wish to satisfy their vocational and avocational needs.

The
Theatre of the Absurd: The Parent/Student/Teacher Interview
This is a play based on an actual
interview.
Important questions are raised about the purpose of parent-teacher
interviews
and how students are treated in the process.

WebtoWeb:
Writing in HTML describes how
WYSIWYG html editors that come with your
browser can be used to transform a mind map into a web site.
Also,
there are several references about the development and use of
interactive
documents.

Authentic
Assessment: a briefing provides
an introduction to authentic assessment.
It discusses what it is, why you would want to use it, and what is
required
to implement it. There are also links to sites offering
in-depth
analysis and examples.

Quantum
2000 is getting dated.
In the article I suggest that letting
students work at their own speed will allow them to complete up to two
years of post secondary education before they leave high school. This
would
strengthen the curriculum, improve access to education and reduce
costs.
I still think this is a good argument for student centred learning.
